The refurbishment of the Arthur Birch Building at the Australian National University’s Research School of Chemistry revitalises a historically significant facility while preserving its Commonwealth Heritage status. Originally built in 1967, the building was upgraded to enhance its performance and usability without compromising its architectural integrity.

Working alongside WSP Lighting Design, mLight delivered an Australian-engineered lighting solution designed to operate within strict structural limitations. A combination of Kleo X 78 and Ligera provides uniform, low-glare illumination across laboratory, teaching, and circulation spaces, supporting visual comfort and clarity for daily research activities.

To further improve efficiency and usability, the system integrates wireless lighting controls with daylight harvesting, motion sensing, and simple scene adjustment. The result is a modern, responsive lighting environment that aligns with the building’s legacy while supporting contemporary performance standards.
