When you walk through the doors of Building IB and see the refurbished interior design, you begin to realise that David Miller from DS Architects and Tim Bush from JBA Consulting Engineers have created something very special indeed.

The outside of the Building IB at Deakin University looks like the other buildings on the Waurn Ponds Geelong campus. It’s not until you walk through the door and see the refurbished interior design that you begin to realise that David Miller from DS Architects and Tim Bush from JBA Consulting Engineers have created something very special indeed.

As you explore, your eyes instantly notice brightly coloured hexagonal shapes that pop against the dark ceilings and floors. This is carried throughout the building at areas where students have the facilities to study and collaborate together.

There’s a lot to consider when refurbishing an entire building, with many different ways to achieve similar results. So with the lighting design in mind, David and Tim worked closely with mLight Product Consultant, Christopher Toth, to create the right solution that effectively and efficiently fit their design brief.

Encapsulating the collaboration areas are mLight’s Swerve LED’s suspended in perfect circles. The black powdercoat finish accentuates the seamlessly lit diffuser, further encouraging students to stop for a while.

Guiding the thoroughfare between these facilities and around corners to the different classrooms are continuous lengths of mLight’s Queen of task lighting – the Kleo.  The classrooms see mitre joined, zig-zagging Kleo suspended between acoustic panelling, hexagonal in shape to mirror the pops of colour through the design.
